Weekly Update for 09/24/18

Early Release @ 1:00 on Friday, September 28
On Friday, September 28, Hardy, Carrollton, and Westside elementary schools will dismiss at 1:00 pm.. This will allow buses to complete their runs before streets are closed in Smithfield for the SHS Homecoming parade.
Due to Early Release, our lunch will be 11:05-11:45. 

Class Dojo

If you haven’t logged into Class Dojo for the year, please do so at this time.  Attached to this memo, you will find a code that is specific for your child.  Via Class Dojo you can see updates on your child’s behavior and activities throughout the week. 

Reading Steps at Home

We will begin sending books home and logging steps at home on Monday, October 8th.  Currently, we are logging steps at school and building stamina towards 30 minutes of independent reading.  The Home Coach Contract will be sent home on Monday, October 1st that will have more information about at home reading and how to log reading steps at home.

Each Wednesday, first grade teachers will be meeting for an extended grade level meeting.  In order to accommodate this in our schedule, our day will be "wacky."  We will go to the computer lab at 9:30-1:30 and resource 2:10-3:40.

What are we learning this week?
Reading
1.7 Use semantic clues and syntax to expand vocabulary when reading. 
1.8 Expand vocabulary.
1.9 Read and demonstrate comprehension of a variety of fictional texts.
e) Ask and answer who, what, when, where, why, and how questions about what is read. 
Writing SOL 1.13 The student will write to communicate ideas of a variety of purposes. 
c) Revise by adding descriptive words when writing about people, places, things, and events. 

Math
SOL 1.11
a. identify and trace, describe, and sort plane figures (triangle, square, rectangle and circle) according to number of sides, vertices and angles
b. identify and describe representations of circles, squares, rectangles and triangles in different environments, regardless of orientation and explain reasoning.

Weekly Update for 09/17/18

IOWC Fair Field Trip
Due to hurricane Florence, the IOWC Fair has been cancelled.  I will send home any money sent in for a chaperone ticket.

Wacky Wednesday Schedule

IOWC Fair Field Trip
Friday, September 14th is our field trip to the IOWC fair.  Permission slips are due Thursday, September 13th.  The cost of the trip is free for students and $1.00 for parents/chaperones.  Parent chaperones can meet teachers and students at Gate 2 to enter the fair with the class. We plan to arrive at 10:00.  Unless noted on your child’s permission, please pack a bag lunch that we will have as a picnic at the fair.

Red Folder and Agenda Book
 Thank you for checking your child’s agenda book and red homework folder each night.  Included in your child’s agenda book will be there daily behavior check-in.  At the end of the day, your child decides what kind of day they have had: a great day, an okay day, or tomorrow will be better.  I will initial the agenda book and write a note if I disagree with the evaluation your child has written.
