Weekly Update for 10/24/16

Book Character/Pumpkin Day 
We will be celebrating Book Character Day on Monday, October 31.  Everyone is welcome to dress up as their favorite book character and bring the book that their character is from.  We will have a parade around the school beginning at 9:15.  Please remember masks and items that represent weapons are not allowed in school. In the afternoon we will also have a party to celebrate the season.  

What are we learning this week?
Reading: 
SOL 1.13 Write to communicate ideas for a variety of purposes.

Math: Addition and Subtraction
1.7 The student will:
a. recognize and describe with fluency part-whole relationships for numbers up to 10 in a variety of configurations
b. demonstrate fluency with addition facts for sums to 10 or less and the corresponding subtraction facts

Science: Animals
SOL 1.5 The student will investigate and understand that animals, including humans, have basic needs and certain distinguishing characteristics.  Key concepts include:
a. basic needs include adequate air, food, water, shelter, space (habitat);
b. animals, including humans, have many different physical characteristics; and
c. animals can be classified according to a variety of characteristics.

Weekly Update for 10/17/16

PTA Open House Rescheduled 
Due to Hurricane Matthew, PTA Open House has been rescheduled.  We will unveil our finished project on Tuesday, October 18 during PTA Open House (6:00-8:00).  Make sure to mark your calendar for this important event.

What are we learning this week?
Reading: 
SOL 1.9 Read and demonstrate comprehension of a variety of fictional texts.
d) Make and confirm predictions.
f) Identify characters, setting, important events.
g) Retell stories and events, using beginning, middle, and end.
h) Identify the main idea or theme.
i) Read and reread familiar stories, poems, and passages with fluency, accuracy, and meaningful expression.
SOL 1.10 Read and demonstrate comprehension of a variety of nonfiction texts.
e) Make and confirm predictions.
g) Identify the main idea.
h) Read and reread familiar passages with fluency, accuracy, and meaningful expression.

Math: Geometry
SOL 1.13 The student will sort and classify concrete objects according to one or more attributes.
SOL 1.14 The student will identify, describe, extend, create, and transfer growing and repeating patterns.

Science:
SOL 1.6 The student will investigate and understand the basic relationships between the sun and the Earth.
a) the sun is the source of heat and light that warms the land, air, and water
b) the sun's relative position in the morning is in the east and in the late afternoon it is in the west

Art Projects Online
This is a wonderful resource our new art teacher, Ms. Enyingi is using to display our class' art projects.  Check back each week to view the different pieces of artwork your child has done in art class.  


What are we learning this week?
Reading: 
SOL 1.9 Read and demonstrate comprehension of a variety of fictional texts.

Math: Geometry
SOL 1.11 The student will a) identify and trace, describe, and sort plane geometric figures (triangle, square, rectangle, and circle) according to number of sides, vertices, and right angles; and.
b) identify and describe representations of circles, squares, rectangles, and triangles in different environments and explain reasoning.

Social Studies: 1.6 The student will develop a geographic understanding that a) the location of Virginia determines its climate and results in four distinct seasons; and b) the landforms of Virginia affect the places people live.

Science: 1.7  The student will investigate and understand weather and seasonal changes. Key concepts include a) changes in temperature, light, and precipitation affect plants and animals, including humans; b) there are relationships between daily and seasonal changes; and c) changes in temperature, light, and precipitation can be observed and recorded over time.
