Oliver Farms Field Trip

We will be going to Oliver Farms on Thursday, May 10^th to learn about strawberry plants and to do some strawberry picking.  Attached to the weekly memo is your child’s permission slip.  There is no cost for the trip.  Please complete the attached permission slip and return to school by Wednesday, May 9^th.

Field Day Shirt Sales

Our Field Day Shirt Sale begins Monday, April 30th.  The sale runs through Friday, May 11th.  The order forms are attached to this week's memo.  

Donors Choose Project

Thanks to donations to our project “Easy Listening,” our class has 6 new sets of headphones.  We have another projected posted (a bit more expensive).  It is for tables and chairs that would allow for more flexibility.  A link to the project is listed below.

What are we learning this week?

Writing SOL 1.13 The student will write to communicate ideas of a variety of purposes. 

a) Generate ideas.

b) Focus on one topic.

c) Revise by adding descriptive words when writing about people, places, things, and events.

d) Use complete sentences in final copies.

e) Begin each sentence with a capital letter and use ending punctuation in final copies.

f) Use correct spelling for commonly used sight words and phonetically regular words in final copies.

g) Share writing with others.

Math SOL  1.1 Skip Counting
The student will count forward orally by ones, twos, fives, and tens to determine the total number of objects to 110.

"Every Quilt Tells a Story- What's your story?"

Thank you so much to all the families that attended the 1st grade expo last Tuesday night.  We raised $900, which will be given to the Women's Club of Smithfield, Headstart of Smithfield, and Christian Outreach.

Weekly Update for 04/16/18

"Every Quilt Tells a Story- What's your story?"

Things you need to know about the night of the EXPO

·     Drop off your child at the gym/YMCA entrance at 6:00pm. Families will enter through the main door entrance.

·     Bring cash….Raffle tickets will be sold for the chance to win your child’s classroom quilt. Tickets will be $1 each or 6 tickets for $5.  All proceeds will support a local charity that each class has selected.

·     The EXPO will begin promptly at 6:15 in the cafeteria. 

·     The expo will be held in the cafeteria and the gym.  A tour guide will be guiding you through “Every quilt has a story what is yours?” expo where you will experience first hand what empathy means to a first grader.

·     Ask questions

o  What does empathy mean to you?  How did your family show empathy?

o  What is kind, specific, helpful feedback? How did this help you through the  quilt making process?

o  How did you show GRIT while working on your quilt squares? 

o  Why is it important to support our local charities?  How do they help our community?

o  What do you take away from this learning experience?

The expo will close with all the families and guests in the cafeteria for the winning raffle tickets to be drawn at 7:00pm.

Lost and Found Items

All items in the Lost and Found at school will be donated this week.  Please make sure to check it when you come to the Expo on Tuesday.
