Weekly Update for 12/12/16

Polar Express Day
Friday, December 16 we will be celebrating the holiday season with Polar Express.  Everyone is invited to wear their pajamas to school and bring their favorite stuffed animal with them.  We will be watching the movie "The Polar Express" and build graham cracker trains to enjoy during the movie.

What are we learning this week?
Reading: 
We will be reading a variety of holiday stories this week and doing activities centered around them.
Monday- Mooseltoe
Tuesday- K is for Kwanzaa
Wednesday- Our Eight Nights of Hanukkah
Thursday- How the Grinch Stole Christmas
Friday- The Polar Express

Math: 
SOL 1.7 The student will:
a) recognize and describe with fluency part-whole relationships for numbers up to 10

b) demonstrate fluency with addition facts with sums to 10 or less and corresponding subtraction facts.

Science: Animals
SOL 1.5 The student will investigate and understand that animals, including humans, have basic needs and certain distinguishing characteristics.  Key concepts include:
a. basic needs include adequate air, food, water, shelter, space (habitat);
b. animals, including humans, have many different physical characteristics; and
c. animals can be classified according to a variety of characteristics.

What are we learning this week?
Reading: 
SOL 1.13 Write to communicate ideas for a variety of purposes.

Math: 
The student will a) count forward to 110, starting at any number between 0 and 110, and write the corresponding numerals;
b) represent a number from 0-110 using concrete objects; 

c) count backward by ones when given any number between 1 and 30

Science: Animals
SOL 1.5 The student will investigate and understand that animals, including humans, have basic needs and certain distinguishing characteristics.  Key concepts include:
a. basic needs include adequate air, food, water, shelter, space (habitat);
b. animals, including humans, have many different physical characteristics; and

Weekly Update for 11/21/16

"The ABC's of Thanksgiving"
We will presenting our play "The ABC's of Thanksgiving" on Wednesday, November 23 at 10:00 in our classroom.  We will sing a few songs and perform our play.  Following our play, you are more than welcome to take your child and being your Thanksgiving holiday early.  School will dismiss at 12:50 that day for everyone.

What are we learning this week?
Reading: 
We will be reviewing all Reading SOL's taught up to this point.

Math: We will be reviewing all math SOL's taught up to this point.

Social Studies: Life in the Past versus Life in the Present
SOL 1.2 c)
The student will demonstrate knowledge of Virginia history by describing important events and people in the history of the Commonwealth, including:  
c) life in Virginia in the past and today, including food, clothing, shelter, transportation, and recreation.

Batteries Needed for Coding
First grade students are working on an animal project in STEM class.  Each student will need 2 3V button batteries. They are sold as a two pack at Dollar Tree.  Please send these to school with your child in a baggie labeled with their name.
