PALS Testing
This week will begin our PALS (Phonological Awareness Literacy Screening) testing.  It is not something your child can study for, but a way of assessing their understanding of phonics, reading, and comprehension.  Each child will be given a spelling, sight word recognition, and oral reading assessment.  Once the testing is complete, I will send home a letter explaining how your child performed.  At that time I will also schedule conferences to discuss the results.  

What are we learning this week?
Language Arts: 
Strategy:  Predicting
Skill:  Sequencing and Retelling
Phonics:  beginning consonants j, w, v, x, y, z, q; -et, -en, 
-ug, -up, -ut word families

Writing:  Authors Are Never Finished

Math: Addition and Subtraction (SOL 1.5)

Science: Investigations and the Five Senses (SOL 1.1)

Weekly Update for 09/14/15


Isle of Wight County Fair Field Trip
Once again the first grade has been invited to the Isle of Wight County Fair four our 1st field trip.  We will visit the fair on Friday, September 18.  The cost of the field trip for each child will be $1.00.  Please look for a permission slip in your child's Red Homework Folder. 

What are we learning this week?

We will be learning all about our new class and grade this week.  We will continue to practice the Daily 5 (reading to self, reading to someone, listening to reading, working with words, and guided reading).  Also we will begin our journey to becoming authors in Writer's Workshop.

Math: Numbers 1-10 (SOL 1.1a)

Social Studies: Citizenship (SOL 1.10)

  • 1 Composition Notebook (3 total)
  • 1 Can of Tennis Balls

Weekly Update for 06/08/15

Zoo Field Trip
Just a reminder that our field trip to the zoo has been moved to is on Tuesday, June 9.  Please remember to have your child dress comfortably with tennis shoes and sunscreen if the weather requires it.  Unless marked on your child's permission slip, he/she needs to pack their lunch in a paper bag for the trip as well.  

The Rainbow Fish Play
We are once again preparing to perform a short play for our “Red Carpet Event” at 10:00 on Thursday, June 11. We will perform The Rainbow Fish play in our classroom. Following our play we will have a short awards ceremony.  Anyone is welcome to attend our “Red Carpet Event”, and at the conclusion, you are more than welcome to take your child and begin your summer vacation a little early.

Weekly Update for 06/01/15


Zoo Field Trip
